Evaluation of the performance of walnut selected superior genotypes

Propagation of walnut selected genotypes related to walnut breeding projects was started in 2004 with the seed sowing for the production of rootstocks. Later in 2005 the propagation of first group of genotypes from 3 walnut collections of Shahroud, Mashhad and Urumieh together with the genotypes from the provinces (Kerman, Yasouj and Shahre Kord) were done. In 2005, the propagation of a new group of selected genotypes were done by grafting of some genotypes selected from Kerrman, Alborz, Qazvin, Zanjan, Fars and East Azerbaijan. The collection of superior genotypes continued until 2009. The grafted plants transferred to the orchard in a replicated trial with 2 replications and 3 trees in each replication in March 2007. Meanwhile more than 88 selected genotypes planted together with them as 3 trees for each new genotype for primary evaluations in Karaj. Results showed mean of trunk circumference was 17.57 cm, mean of radius in north, east, south and west were 59.48, 58.85, 56.76 and 58/53 cm, respectively. Earliest leafing date was belong to k15 genotype (30 of march) and latest time was belong to Round de Montignac cultivar and Yazd genotype (18 and 14 April, respectively. Number of fruits in each genotype was very variable, mean of fruits was 11.6 and highest fruit were belong to G3 and Kz3 genotypes with 150 and 112.5 fruits, respectively
