A study was conducted for isolation, characterization and evaluation of N2- fixation ability of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) nodulating rhizobia for six years in Iran. At the first year 221 root nodule samples were collected from 12 provinces. Nodule samples were cultured on YMA plates after surface sterilization and finally 207 isolates were obtained. In the next step the isolates were assessed for 'nodulation ability on the host plant in a plant infection test. In this step 113 isolates Were able to induce root nodules on bean plants. Microscopic observations and morPhological investigations showed that 83 isolates could be regarded as bean symbiont; Greenhouse experiment was carried out in a soil Without indigenous bean rhizobia at a completely randomized design (CRD) in four kg pots using 83 isolates, two nitrogen (35 and 70 mg/kg N) and a control treatment. Results of the greenhouse experiment showed that most of the isolates increased dry matter, N-content and N-uptake of the shoots as compared to the control. Based on this results 35 isolates were selected for field experiments in ten provinces. The inoculates were prepared in the powder form using perlite as the carrier material. Field experiment in each province was carried out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) including ten rhizobial isolates, two nitrogen fertilizers (200 and 400 kg urea per ha) and one control treatment in four replications. Results:of the field experiments showed that application of the isolates increased seed yield and other growth factors of bean plants in all provinces
