Natural enhancement of terrestrial flora diversity in a rehabilitated forest at Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia

Since 1991, a total of 126 species from 24 families of indigenous trees have been planted in the rehabilitated forest (Joint project of Universiti tPutra Malaysia and Mitsubishi Corporation) at Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia. To 'assess if this rehabilitation forest is becoming a tropical forest with multi type of terrestrial flora, a survey was conducted to estimate the increment of species and type of plants migrating to this forest. Results showed that the number of migrating plant species has reached 220 species consisting of 57% (129 species) Woody plants, 23% climber and creeper (51 species), 12% (26 species) herbaceous and 9% (19 species) fern. Woody plants constitute of 47 species of shrubs and 82 species of trees with many of them at seedling and sapling stages. [Except for herbaceous and ferns, the occurrence of these migrating plants were observed mainly in the gaps and forest fringe which explains the high number of secondary forest species elements. It is clear that the rehabilitation project in terms of enhancement of terrestrial flora diversity is progressing well and application of silvicultural treatment might be needed to ensure that this migrating species could survive in these nearly even-aged man made forest stands.
