Although birds lack brown adipose tissue, a thermogenic organ found in mammals, they possess other thermogenic mechanisms. In the current studies, we determined the organs playing a role in thermogenesis by studying how chicks acquire cold tolerance. we found that the acquisition of cold tolerance paralleled the increase in weight and size of the heart but without signs of the concentric hypertrophy. There was no difference in weights of the other organs between control chicks and cold-adapted chicks. These results suggest that the specific enhancement of heart growth is involved in the acquisition of thermogenesis in chicks.
