Progress in designing future clones through utilization of new germplasm

The narrow genetic base of the initial Hevea population introduced to Malaysia has hindered sustainable improvement in Hevea breeding. Later there were several introductions of new genetic materials to broaden the genetic base. The 1981 germplasm showed large variations both in girth measurements and yield however, the yield was generally low ranging from 0.39 g/t/t to 13.86 g/t/t as compared to PBIG GG4and5 with 65.12 g/t/t. However some of these germplasm materials possessed characteristics suitable for timber production such as high growth vigour and long straight boles with log volume ranging from 1.01 to 1.66 m3/tree at 13 years old. The incorporation of these germplasm materials into the rubber breeding programme through cross-breeding produced progenise with higher growth vigour and intermediate yield in the first breeding cycle. The results of this study and other researchers suggest that growth vigour and yield were both controlled by mainly addictive genetic components for growth vigour yield and other important characteristics through systematic breeding and selection programme would eventually produced better latex timber clones in the future.
