Recovery and physical performance of veneer from coconut trunk - a preliminary study

A study was conducted to determine the veneer recovery and physical properties (moisture content, shrinkage, and density) from processing Cocos nucifera trunks. Coconut trunk (n=5) from 40-50 years old trees from a farm in Bagan Datoh, Hutan Melintang, Perak were cut into three 3 metre billets representing trunk`s bottom, middle and top. At the processing centre, each billet was further cut into 1.35 metre portion to fit the spindleless peeling machine for debarking and peeling. Results from the 15 billets showed that average veneer recovery for bottom, middle and top were respectively 40%-45%, 45%-47% and 36%-40%. Average shrinkage of coconut veneers for the bottom billets were 9%-11 %, for the middle 10%-12%, and for the top 15%-22%, and the moisture content respectively averaging 37%, 41 %,45%. The density of the bottom portion averaged 850kg/m3, the middle 770 kg/m3 and the top 640 kg/m3 It is concluded that there were variation in physical properties of the coconut trunk. Future recommended use is dependant on the characteristic features of the veneer`s physical features.
