Situation and outlook of the coconut industry in Malaysia.

The coconut palm (Cocos nucifera L.) in Malaysia is the fourth important in terms of grown area after oil palm, rubber and paddy, contributing 0.08% of total export earnings in 2006. The total coconut growing area is declining at Annual Growth Rate (AGR) of 4.05%: from 151,000 ha in 2001 to 115,000 ha in 2008. Nut production within the same period increases marginally at AGR 1.93%. By socio-economic measure coconut is an important agriculture sector as the well-being of 80,000 households is dependent on it. About 63% of the production is for domestic consumption and the rest export as fresh or tender nut, and processed to oil and cream powders. The Malaysian Government`s strategic plans under National Coconut Development Plan (2001-2010) and Coconut Industry Revitalizing Plan (2008-2015) is focusing on replanting 8,000 ha Matag Hybrid and 2,000 ha Pandan, rehabilitation another 55,000 ha, seedling production, increasing hectarage practicing inter¬cropping, and strengthening RandD support. It is envisage the plan will provide impetus and the right direction to promote and accelerate development of the industry, with significant social and economic impact to those directly and indirectly involved.
