Management of fuel oil flyash : a research perspective

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is utilizing gas for power generation utilities as part of the government's plans to expand gas utilization. However, it is also known that the bigger power plants and IWPPs in Saudi Arabia are fueled by oil. This may be less favorable than gas from environmental point of view. Therefore, future plans witness large increase in the use of oil as fuel for power plants and IWPPs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Fuel oil is not widely used in power plants in other parts of the world, partly because of fluctuation in oil prices. However, in Saudi Arabia which has the largest proven reserves of oil in the world; it is a readily available and economically feasible to use fuel oil for such purpose. However, just like coal, which is also used for electric power generation in many countries, the process of power generation produces huge quantities of flyash as solid waste. The amount of flyash produced and its physical characteristics, as a powder, would create a real problem to manage. A review of the literature indicates that flyash produced from fuel oil is not widely investigated, which is different in its characteristics and chemical composition from the coal flyash and, hence, its impact on the environment is different and its uses and ways of disposal are also different. Therefore, national research programs are needed to explore means of utilizing the heavy fuel oil flyash and its safe disposal, particularly for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia large producer of flyash. In this paper, the research program that was submitted to King Abdulaziz for Science and Technology (KACST) for financial fund will be outlined together with some preliminary results.
