The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possibility of producing bioenergy from logging residues, such as limbs, tops and stem butts left on landings. The usable amount of the residues was also estimated. Measuring methods for the amount of landing residue were developed. In the present developed method, stacked volume of residue piles was measured and converted into dry weight. The volume and weight of several piles were measured, and the relationship between measurement results was clarified. Higher density was found for larger samples. Water content of some samples were much higher that that of standing trees. This could indicate that water content of landing residues often increases over time. The usable amount of logging residues on landings found in this study was approximately 55% of the stand weight, which was considered extremely high. Re-calculation based on reasonable data gave estimates of 30%, which was considered reasonable and in accordance with that of previous reports. Logging residues left on landings may be used for bioenergy without special system of biomass production.
