Modeling Andaman tsunami in Malaysia due to a five-segment fault

The 2004 Andaman mega tsunami serves a wake-up call to many countries affected by it. To help develop human resources capable in tsunami and disaster management, the School of Civil Engineering has recently formed the Disaster Research Nexus (DRN) with the primary goals of conducting cutting edge scientific research on all aspects of natural disasters, and of helping to prepare communities that are resilient to natural disasters. Among others,research undertaken by DRN includes tsunami simulations for impact assessment and mitigation, the results of which can be made available to communities at risk. For this purpose, an in-house tsunami simulation model TUNA has been developed and successfully applied to the 2004 Andaman tsunami for the northwest coast of Malaysia.TUNA is constantly being enhanced to improve its robustness and range of applications. This paper will discuss the important of accurate tsunami source representation for achieving good simulation results. Tsunami propagation simulations by means of TUNA with two source representations for the 2004 Andaman are presented and the results compared to arrive at some conclusion. TUNA is capable of producing simulation results that match reported tsunami rump waves along affected beaches in Penang and Kedah coasts. This tsunami simulation model is constantly undergoing enhancements to improve its performance and robustness.
