Polyphenol and salicylic acid levels in fresh and air-dried powder of Centella asiatica, L. (Urban)

Centella asiatica (1.) Urban (pegaga) from the umbelliferae family has been reported to possess many biomedicines and therapeutic effects. C. asiatica has been found to reduse the inflammatory phase of scar formation and enhance the maturation phase. In our previous studies, C. asiatica extracts have been found to reduce the carrageenan-induced acute inflammation in mice. Regarding to this matter, we try to determine the level of polyphenol and salicylic acid in fresh and air-dried powder of C. asiatica, which might be the responsible compounds for the release of anti-inflammatory activity. The air-dried powder of roots stem (including stolons) and leaf of C. asiatica showed significantly lower (p less than 0.05) content of polyphenol (0.129,0.067 and 0.111 microgram/mg dried methanol extract, respectively) compared to fresh samples of roots, stem (including stolons) and leaf of C. asiatica (0.261, 0.150 and 0.233 migrogram/mg dried methanol extract, respectively). The study also revealed that fresh samples of roots, stem (including stolon) and leaf of C. asiatica showed significantly higher (p less than 0.05) content of salicylic acid (0.382, 0.226 and 0.1705 microgram/mg dried methanol extract, respectively) compared to air-dried powder samples of roots, stem (including stolons) and leaf of C. asiatica (0.086, 0.046 and 0.049 migrogram/mg dried methanol extract, respectively.)
