This paper reports the results from the investigation on the chemical composition of essential oil from fresh stem of Xylopia magna Maingay ex Hook. F. collected from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Forest Reserve. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation technique in a Clavenger-type apparatus while the chemical composition of the oil was determined by gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and retention indices. Extraction of the stem yielded a yellow coloured essential oil (0.21 %). Seventeen compounds were identified, accounting to 96.2% of the total oil with sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (89.1%) as the major compound group. Three major compounds present in the oil were germacrene D (1) (34.4%), cyperene (14.0%) and alpha-copaene (8.4%).
