Effects of fermented total mixed ration on feed intake, ruminal fermentation, nutrient digestibility and blood metabolites in dairy cows

In a study to see the effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC), Asperigillus oryzae (AO) and non-ionic surfactant (NIS) on the DMI, BCS and performance of lactating cows, 40 pregnant Holstein dairy cows were divided into 4 groups by parity and milk production of their previous lactation, lactation number, live weight and BCS. Within each group, 10 cows in the transition period were randomly allocated to the control, SC, AO and NIS supplemented TMR (total mixed ration). Daily milk production for 42d post-partum was not affevted, in contrast to 4% FCM production was significantly (P0.05) affected by the supplementation of SC, AO or NIS, due to the significant treatment differences of fat components. The production of FCM by the cows fed TMR supplemented with SC, AO and NIS was 21.32, 11.53 and 9.26% higher than those fed control TMR. Efficiency of feed utilization for milk production was significantly (P0.05) improved by the supplementation of all additives tested, especially by NIS. These results showed that NIS might be of use as an alternative feed additive such as SC or AO to improve the performances of dairy cows.
