Empowerment of plantation farmers through total ergonomics approach at Petiga Village, Tabanan, Bali

Recent economic situation impacted to any small scale industries in Bali. It was needed an ability to survive and face the challenge. Among them was gardening plantation industry at Petiga Village Tabanan Bali. The gardening plantation farmers worked traditionally and manually. Production process was poor working condition of gardening plantation and should be improved. Several efforts could be done, among others was ergonomic intervention especially total ergonomics approach. The objective research is to find any ergonomics problems of gardening plantation working condition and encourage the farmer within the process to get the appropriate solution. This researh was an action research and done at Petiga Village Tabanan Bali since 2003 until now. The subject was platation farmer who chosen randomly from 174 families. Total ergonomics approach was applied through SHIP approach and appropriate technology as an intervention. The subjects were encouraged within problems identification through observations, interviews and focus group discussion. The results were several ergonomics problems such as workshop, posture, handling and tools. Several action plans were already implemented such as musculoskeletal complaints of the farmer, elderly farmer, woman workers, classification plants and Trans Bali Trail for tourism. Improvements were done together with the farmers. Empowerment of farmer was done since identification problems, making priority, internal and external analysis, designing strategic planning and action plan, adaptation and evaluating through brainstorming and discussion. It`s concluded that total ergonomics approach could empower the farmer. They could aware the problems of ergonomics and find out the solutions for their selves. The programs still continue and encourage for concern and commitment of all stake holders.
