Yield performance of salt-tolerant rice varieties at different levels of salinity stress

Salt-tolerant varieties of rice improved production in many salt-affected areas in the world. To determine the yield performance of salt-tolerant rice varieties developed by IRRI, nine varieties were planted in Ajuy, Iloilo, Philippines at three levels of salinity (Electrical Conductivity EC: 6.54 dS/m, 9.91 dS/m and 14.72 dS/m. The three levels of salinity represent the EC level most experienced by farmers in the field. Results showed that nine varieties have different reactions to salinity levels in terms of yield performance. Rice bred specifically for salinity has performed well under salinity but only at a certain extent of salt stress. NSIC Rc222 can be productive at minimum level (EC 6.54 dS/m) of salt stress, however, yield breakdown was very significant when EC level was increased by 3.3 dS/m (EC 9.91 dS/m). Recently developed saltol introgressed varieties can be superior in low to moderate salinity stress. IR63307-4B-4-3 which was released as NSIC Rc182 in the Philippines and BR47 in Bangladesh is most productive at high level of salt-stress.
