Japonica 2, a special rice newly released for the tropics

Tropical country-bred japonica varieties such as Maligaya Special series no 11 (MS 11) and Japonica 1 have been known for their good quality, resistance to lodging, and high market value. However, their yield potential has not fully met farmers' expectations. The continuing efforts of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the Rice Varietal Improvement Group (RVIG) of the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) to breed new varieties have been undertaken with shifting production constraints. A series of evaluation was done by the National Cooperative Test (NCT) in five different locations for about four seasons from 2009 dry season to 2010 wet season. Japonica 2, a variety newly approved for release as a special purpose rice was introduced last 2011. It is primarily grown in irrigated upland environment. Registered as NSIC Rc242 SR (IR83515-30-1-1-3(J)) and crossed from IR80091-46-2-1 and IR1663-14-2-3-5, it recorded an average yield of 5.3 t/ha during the dry season and has a yield advantage of 35.6% over the check MS11. It matures in 109 days and has a wide range of resistance to blast and bacterial blight. As to grain quality, Japonica 2 has good milling potential and head rice recovery. It is as highly acceptable in cooked form as MS11 but is inferior in raw form by about 25%.
