Growth and yield of corn as affected by different row intercropping patterns with indeterminate tomato

The study aimed to determine the growth and yield of corn as influenced by different row intercropping patterns with indeterminate tomato. Results indicated that two rows of corn intercropped with one row of tomato were the most vigorous. Corn intercropped with one row of tomato recorded the highest weight of 1000 seeds while three rows of corn intercropped with two rows of tomato recorded the highest yield and returns on investment. There was a remarkable R0I [Return on Investment] on one row, two rows and three rows intercropping patterns. The Analysis of Variance showed a significant difference on the number of plants damaged by corn borer and the weight of 1000 seeds per treatment. Result of the study indicated further that row intercropping tomatoes with corn is beneficial to corn farmers for it could significantly reduce insect damage and increases the net income. Likewise tomatoes as row intercrops increases yield per unit area because tomato is harvested earlier than corn and if the corn as main crop is a failure due to uncontrolled environmental condition and calamities like a strong typhoon which hit the plants during the hard dough stage, still a good harvest was realized due to the income derived from the tomatoes.
