Characterization of existing Jatropha curcas in various nurseries and plantations in Camarines Sur [Bicol, Philippines]
2009
Anon.
There were six known plantation sites in Camarines Sur [Bicol, Philippines], all located in the eastern part of the municipality, but only five sites namely, Sto Niño, Calabanga, Pili, Iriga City and Libmanan were included in the study. No distinct differences were observed among the botanical attributes of the plants in the sites except for the onset of flowering, fruit maturity, number of matured fruits developed, and the quality of the plants and fruits produced. It is worth mentioning though that the plantation in Libmanan was established later than the rest of the plantation sites, which apparently influenced the results. It was revealed that jatropha plants in Calabanga and Irigan City were healthier than those found in the other plantations. Plants in the two plantations also had the highest average height (4.9m) and number of shoots per plant (16). Meanwhile, the newly planted jatropha in the Libmanan plantation had the shortcut average height (3.5m); smallest girth or main stem (2 cm), and fewest shoots per plant (12). Results also showed that on the average, Jatropha produced flowers 125-130 DAP while the fruit only took 30-35 days to mature. The shortest period of fruit maturity (30 days) was observed in jatropha planted in Calabanga and the longest period (35 days) was observed in Sto. Niño and Iriga. The quicker the fruits mature, the more efficient it is for the producers. Likewise, it was found that the average number of fruits per inflorescence ranged from 4 fruits to 6 fruits with the plants in Calabanga having the highest average number of fruits (6) while the least was observed in Libmanan (4).
