Identifying the social and economic view points in utilizing Jatropha curcas as a biodiesel feedstock

Findings revealed that at present, Jatropha production, promotion, and development projects could be classified either as LGU [local government unit] _led or private-led. But either way, three different modes of business arrangements namely, production/growership, lease, and joint venture agreements were observed which involved farmers, investors, landowners, and government agencies. An investment analysis was also conducted to assess the profitability of jatropha production as a business venture. It was based on the idea that the seeds are sold to a biodiesel processing enterprise and that its price would compete with the price of diesel pump. The analysis showed that jatropha was not a feasible business investment given that the total cost of labor operations and materials exceeded the expected profits from selling the seeds with a government-buying price of only P4.50/kg of seeds. The study also found out that although the jatropha industry was still young, its production, promotion, and development was already integral in proving the lives of rural communities as it has given both women and men and the indigenous people equal employment opportunities. However, despite this perceived importance of Jatropha production, there were still a number of growers who had uncertainties regarding their involvement in the industry. Some reasons cited was the uncertainty of market for Jatropha seeds and its low buying prices.
