Developing a general protocol for rooted 'Narek' [Hopea cagayanensis] stem cuttings

The mixture of pure river sand and partly decomposed coco coir dust produced the best survival of Narek stem cuttings having the highest mean percentage of 66.22%. Results likewise showed that cuttings treated with 500 ppm IBA enhanced better survival of the cuttings producing the highest number of adventitious roots (5.42) as compared with 0 ppm (control) and those treated with 1,000 ppm IBA, with 3.93 and 4.23, respectively. As for the interaction between these two factors, the highest percentage (74.66%) of rooted Narek stems cuttings was observed on cuttings planted in a mixture of pure river sand and partly decomposed coco coir dust and treated with 500 ppm IBA while the lowest (54.66%) was obtained in Narek stem cuttings planted in partly decomposed coco coir dust without IBA. The mixture of pure sand and partly decomposed coco coir produced the most number of roots (4.85) while the longest roots (4.65 cm) were observed in cuttings treated with 500 ppm IBA. When combined, cuttings planted in partly decomposed coco coir dust and treated with 500 ppm IBA produced the longest roots with a mean of 5.72 cm, which was considerably longer compared with the rest of the treatments. Analysis showed that length of roots can be attributed to the concentration of IBA and the type of rooting media used. Also, the treatments had no significant effect on the callus formation of the cuttings. Calluses were observed in cuttings rooted in pure river sand with 0 ppm, 1,000 ppm, and small diameter stem cuttings.
