The efficacy of L. plantarum and L. bulgaricus against R. solanacearum Yabuuchi et al. the causal organism of bacterial wilt of potatoes was determined in vitro and in a field study at Kapatagan, Digos, Davao del Sur. In vitro test showed that L. plantarum and L. bulgaricus are antagonistic to R. solanacearum as indicated by the zone of inhibition in R. solanacearum and L. bulgaricus and in R. solanacearum and L. plantarum with the means of 0.12 cm and 0.08 cm, respectively. Incidence of bacterial wilt was 100% on potatoes with no antagonists planted in R. solanacearum-inoculated soil, while 5.56% incidence on potatoes dipped in L. bulgaricus for 24 hours then planted in R. solanacearum-inoculated soil. There was no incidence in uninoculated potatoes, potatoes dipped in L. plantarum for 24 hours then planted in R. solanacearum-inoculated soil and potatoes planted in biofumigated R. solanacearum-inoculated soil. Potatoes inoculated with putative antagonists did not vary with the uninoculated potatoes based on the number of potato tubers per treatment which ranged from 19.67 to 25.33, number of bags with potato tubers which ranged from 5.67 to 6.00, and yield of potatoes which ranged from 0.67 to 1.10 kg/6 bags. On the other hand, potatoes without antagonists planted in R. solanacearum-inoculated soil had the lowest number of potato tubers (2.00), number of bags with potato tubers (1.00) and yield (0.04 kg/6 bags). Based on the results of the study, L. plantarum and L. bulgaricus are antagonistic to R. solanacearum in vitro. L. bulgaricus showed more antagonism than L. plantarum in vitro, both of them prevented the incidence of bacterial wilt of potato caused by R. solanacearum, which were as effective as biofumigants.
