Effects of different filler materials on the growth performance and flower production of Spathiphyllum (Spathiphyllum Walles ii)

The study was conducted from May 2006 to June 2010 at the Horticultural Section of the West Visayas State University, College of Agriculture, Lambunao, Iloilo [Philippines] to determine the effects of the different filler materials on the growth performance and flower production of Spathiphyllum. An area of 132 square meters excluding guard rows and alley ways was utilized in the study. The area was divided into 20 replicates with a dimension of 3x2.20 meters. The study consisted of five treatments, namely: Treatment A (75% Garden Soil + 25% Sawdust), Treatment B (75% Garden Soil + 25% Bagasse), Treatment C (75% Garden Soil + 25% Coffee pulp), Treatment D (75% Garden Soil + 25% Coco Coir) and Treatment E (75% Garden Soil + 25% Rice Straw). Each bag was filled with a mixture of garden soil and filler with a mixture of garden soil and 25% filler materials. The treatments were laid out in the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) replicated four times. Statistical analysis of the data showed that different filler materials had significant effect on plant height, number of suckers, length of petiole, flower size, number of days to flower and number of flowers developed and harvested for a given period.
