Seasonal abundance of white-backed plant-hoppers (Sogatella furcifera) in Isabela [Philippines]

Insects are still considered the most destructive in terms of damage. It accounts for 20-50% yield losses in rice production. The insect pests which have emerged as a potential threat to rice production are the white-backed plant-hopper (WBPH) Sogatella furcifera and brown plant hopper. These plant-hoppers causes direct damage to plant. With this aspect, this project aimed to explore the damage potential of WBPH and BPH; understand the seasonal fluctuations; and identify rice varieties with high population in rice production areas of Isabela. The plant hoppers population was recorded through tapping and light trapping methods. The plant trapping was done in Burgos, Isabela during dry season (DS) 2012 only. It was observed that NSIC RC132H had the highest number of BPH and WBPH followed by PSB Rc72H, NSIC Rc204H, and NSIC Rc202H; and for inbred PSB Rc18 was preferred than PSB Rc82. The light trapping was conducted in PhilRice Isabela from dry season (DS) - wet season (WS) 2012. It was installed from 6 pm to 6 am; gathering of insects was done immediately for sorting, identification and counting in the laboratory. In DS, the population of WBPH and BPH was highest during mid of February to onset of March which coincides at the maximum tillering to early flowering of the crops. In WS, the highest population was observed at booting stage. The behavioral abundance of planthoppers was peaked at maximum tillering to early flowering stages of the crops. The recommended technologies for planthoppers should be done to avoid damage.
