Evaluation of Natural Farming System (NFS) protocol for rice in the uplands

The study was conducted to evaluate the general effect of NFS rice protocol in the upland. Local upland rice cultivar (Balatinaw) was used in the experiment. The study was established at the research area of Isabela State University, Echague campus. It aims to determine the effect of NFS concoctions as compared with farmers' practices (FP), recommended rate (RR) from the Bureau of Soil, bacterum mineral water (BMW), and control (CTL). Weight of grains of NFS, FP and RR treated were significantly higher than the Control and BMW treated plants. There was no indication of distinct variations on the weight of 2000-grains. The NFS, FP and RR produced the highest number of filled grains while control and BMW produced the least. Large variation among treatments means were noticed on the number of unfilled grains wherein NFS and control produced the highest while BMW treated plants have the lowest number of unfilled grains. NFS treated plants together with FP and RR also produced the heaviest straw yield as compared with control and BMW treated plants. Farmers practice (FP), RR and NFS had the tallest plants while Control and BMW treated plants were significantly shorter. Panicle length was not significant. Panicle length ranges from 17 cm to 20-53 cm. The productive tillers of NFS and FP were greater than the other treatments. On the other hand, Control plants and RR had the highest number of unproductive tillers while FP, NFS and BMW had the lowest number of unproductive tillers.
