Comparative evaluation of the feeding value of three Monsanto corn hybrids and commercial corn on broilers

A study was conducted to evaluate and compare the feeding value of three Monsanto corn hybrids and commercial corn when fed to broilers. Three hundred day-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned into four dietary treatments: Treatment 1- 50% commercial corn, Treatment 2- 50% insect protected-glyphosate tolerant corn (DK818 MON839034 x NK603), Treatment 3- 50% insect protected corn (DK818 NK603) following a Completely Randomized Design. Commercial corn and glyphosate tolerant corn (DK818 MON89034) and Treatmetn 4- 50% glyphosate tolerant corn (DK818 NK603) had significantly higher crude protein than the other two corn hybrids. The coefficient of digestibility and metabolizable energy content of the corn samples used were not statistically different. Starter diet containing glyphosate tolerant corn (DK818 NK603) showed significantly higher crude protein and gross energy content than the other dietary treatments. The coefficient of digestibility and metabolizable energy content of the starter diets were not statistically different among treatments. No significant difference was observed in the crude protein and gross energy content of the finisher diet. Finisher diet with glyphosate tolerant corn (DK818 NK603) had significantly higher coefficient of digestibility and metabolizable energy than the other dietary treatment. Broilers fed diets with commercial corn performed better than the other treatment groups. However, there were no significant differences observed on the dressing percentage, liver weight, abdominal fat and organoleptic characteristics of cooked broiler fed diets containing commercial corn and different corn hybrids.
