The development of alternative control measures for livestock and poultry diseases such as those caused by parasites is necessary to address issues on availability and affordability for smallhold animal raisers, environmental pollution, food safety, drug resistance and organic farming. Herbal plants seem to have the highest potential in meeting these needs considering their abundance in the country and by being 'natural'. For the past several years, there have been studies conducted both in vitro and in vivo on the effect of fresh gliricidia (Tagalog : Kakawate) leaves decoction against external parasites of domestic animals particularly lice and mites of chickens and lice of water buffaloes. In these studies, the insecticidal efficacy of freshly prepared decoction, stored (refrigerated) decoction and different dilutions were investigated. The methodologies, results and discussions of some of these studies are summarized and presented in this paper. Possible future R and D directions regarding the use of herbal plants in general and gliricidia in particular for the control of external parasites of livestock and poultry are briefly discussed.
