Root and shoot development on the propagation of bamboo (Bambusa blumeanalaak var) by one node culm cuttings as influenced by the lunar calendar

The focus of this study was to find out the influence of the lunar calendar as a planting guide on the propagation of bamboos. One node culm cuttings were planted on the marked dates of the lunar calendar to find out influence of the moon on the root and shoot development of bamboos. Findings of the study showed that the highest percentage of survival of the planted cuttings was obtained on one node bamboo culm cuttings planted during the first quarter of the moon. However, the number of shoots developed by the one node culm cuttings in all treatments was not influenced by the phases of the moon. The mean length of the shoots was influenced by the lunar calendar at 90-150 days after planting which resulted to a slowdown in the growth of the one node cuttings which were planted during the full moon and last quarter phases. These were outgrown by the new moon and first quarter planted cuttings. New moon planted culm cuttings produced the longer roots and the shortest was produced by last quarter planted cuttings. It shows that transplanting is best when moonlight decreases because the development of the roots is promoted so it could go deeper into the soil and look for water for its survival. The lunar calendar as an effective guide in propagating one node bamboo culm cuttings is highly recommended to farmers. Planting date of the one node culm cuttings should be scheduled during the 1st quarter phase of the moon within the lunar month for higher percentage of survival. This will help farmers minimize expenses in buying planting materials thus encouraging them to plant idle areas or spaces in their farms to increase their income.
