Varietal evaluation of rice for rainfed lowland ecosystem

This study was conducted for two growing seasons at the Research Experimental Area for rice of the Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology, Lagangilang, Abra [Philippines] for two trials from June 13, 2008 to Oct 30, 2009. It is aimed to determine the performance of selected rice varieties adapted to rainfed lowland ecosystem in terms of growth and yield. Results show that there were significant differences on the height of plants at maturity, number of days to mature, length of panicle, number of grains (filled and unfilled), harvest index, weight of seeds and yield of the different varieties tested. PSB Rc 40 was the tallest at maturity and was most preferred by consumers in both newly cooked and left-overnight form; IR 64 was the earliest to mature; PSB Rc 100 produced the highest number of tillers per hill and filled grains, long panicle, heavy seeds, high harvest index and yield. PSB Rc 100 produced the highest yield among the varieties tested of 4825 kg/ha but this yield is not significantly different to the yield of PSB Rc 40, and PSB Rc 38. These three varieties then are recommended to be raised by farmers farming rainfed areas.
