The role of Strategic Environmental Assessment as a main supporting instrument of strategic sustainable tourism destinations development in Serbia
Srejovic, A.
Environmental problems are recognized as some of the most important and crucial issues nowadays. Regarding this, tourism is recognized as one of the biggest energy consumers and pollutants that can cause extremely negative impacts on the environment including total degradation. Having this in mind it is necessary and of huge importance to have and to develop an integrative and full environmental protection system in strategic tourism planning and to put the focus on sustainable development. Until now Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) was recognized as one of the best and most significant instruments that could provide inclusion of environmental protection in the earliest stages of plans and projects, especially in spatial planning. In global practice some very significant results were achieved with this instrument in all fields of sectoral planning including tourism. In this project the focus is placed on possibilities of applying and implementing SEA for tourism development plans in Serbia and possibilities for introducing it as a main controlling instrument for sustainable tourism destination development in comparison with other examples from the EU and world practice. The present methodology was oriented and organized by using different case studies on SEA in three different areas: Fiji, United Kingdom and Taiwan, that were analyzed and compared with the Serbian case study on SEA for Spatial Plan as Serbia still hasn't done any SEA for the tourism sector.
