Social media and Web 2.0 in local government: the case of the Region of Crete

This thesis portrays the fundamental aspect of our age: sharing and collaborating knowledge as well as experience. From the era of industrial revolution that had at its core mainly selfishness and isolated knowledge, protected by intellectual property laws, we move - already many people have done that - to an era of cooperation and aggregate knowledge, creating content for free, cooperating with people on the other side of the planet easily, without any cost and at any time. By pressing a button - hopefully not a nuke - information and knowledge disseminate rapidly to an endless web of connected people and organizations, creating possibilities, expanding the phase of space and creativity, communication and effective organization. This Web, the cooperative or collaborative Web 2.0 as it is called, which complements Web 1.0, aggregates to a shared universal mind. In the present thesis we portray the theory and current situation as regards the use of Web 2.0 and its applications broadly and more particularly in the realm of e-governance targeted by local governments and the wider public sector in Greece and worldwide. More specifically, we present the steps taken in the last two years and mostly the team work carried out and the results achieved so far by the Region of Crete - an important administrative entity of the current administrative map of Greece - in the field of digital media and Web 2.0.
