The use of millet seeds, sand and ash for the control of bruchids in cowpea seeds during storage

This study was carried out at Elobeid Research Station. Millet (Pennisetum glaucum) L. seeds, sand and wood ash were used as inert materials at the ratios of 1: I and 1:2 with cowpea seeds to control two bruchid species. Callosobruchus maculates and C. chinensis were identified as the only insect species attacking cowpea seeds during storage. Weight loss and number of holes per ten seeds were determined every two months during six months period, and a germination test was carried out at the end of the storage period. The results indicated that all treatments significantly reduced weight loss and number of holes in cowpea seeds compared with the control. Wood ash showed the best results. The ratio of 1: I proved to be the best treatment among all others. Germination tests confirmed the above finding. Therefore, wood ash at the ratio of I: 1 is recommended for the control of bruchids on small-scale storage facilities of cowpea
