Mohamed, Z.E.
The main objective of this study was to estimate the budget costs and revenues of production and marketing of the leafy vegetables in Shambat area, Khartoum State. The specific objectives were to determine the constraints of production and of marketing of the leafy vegetables and to identify attitude of crop production along the banks of River Nile during flood periods. The study depended on secondary data obtained from different official sources including the Khartoum State Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Wealth and Irrigation and Bank of Sudan. The primary data were obtained by using a structured questionnaire involving a random sample of 60 respondents (40 farmers, 10 wholesalers and 10 retailers). The sample was chosen randomly from farmers on the River Nile bank in Shambat area and from traders from Shambat central market. The collected data were subjected to descriptive statistics analysis and budget analysis. The study indicated that the production and marketing of the leafy vegetables in Khartoum state were profitable. The constraints that face the production of the leafy vegetables are poor finance and difficulty in accessing agricultural inputs. Similarly, the problems that face the marketing of the leafy vegetables are high transport cost, especially in autumn, and lack of modem storage facilities. The study recommended the introduction of the leafy vegetables into the crop rotation of the irrigated schemes in Khartoum State to reduce the prices of the leafy vegetables in flood period and add new source of farm income to these schemes. The study also recommended alternative uses for benefiting from the large quantities of leafy crops in form of drying and canning of the products to extend their shelf lifein the market
