Development of sugar beet fullsib families resistant to rhizomaniaύ

43 half sib families related to 15 populations carring rhizomania resistant gene were used to develop full sib resistant family. The mentioned families were achieved from screening of 250 families based on their sugar content. The roots of each family which had been vernalized during winter in cold room transferred to the cage field located in Hamadan Agriculture Research Center in spring 2012. In this field, each root was divided into four pieces which were planted near each other so that they could be covered by one cage. All the cages were irrigated by tape and the pests and diseases agents were controlled at proper time. The plants were covered at stem elongation stage and leaf samples were taken simultaneously for DNA extraction. So, all the plants were screened for presence of RZ1 gene using a molecular marker. Based on the results, the plants lacking the considered gene were discarded and the rest were kept. Therefore, from 744 cages only 313 cages were kept and the rest removed from the field. The seed of full-sib families was harvested and after processing transferred to seed store. Since some of the refered families were resistant to root rot, the obtained full-sib families will be checked for resistance to root rot and the selected families will be used to develop new hybrids later.
