Investigation of glyphosate, Sulfosulfuron and rimsulfuron Split application on broomrape control in tomato

The present investigation was conducted to study chemical control of broom rape )Phelipanche aegyptiaca Pomel) in tomato during 2013 growing season. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications at the field of Barakat Jovein Company. Treatments were including application of different doses of glyphosate, sulfosulfuron and rimsulfuron during a period of 30 to 50 days after tomato transplanting. Check plot was included. EWRC criterion was used to evaluate phytotoxicity effects of herbicides on tomato. Broom rape shoot number and dry weight was recorded three times during growing season. All other weeds were hand weeded. Tomato yield was recorded. SAS Ver. 9.1 portable was used to analysis data. The results showed that all treatments could significantly (p΅ά0.05) reduce broom rape number and yielded higher tomato production compared to check plot. Two time application of sulfosulfuron 30 gha-1 could make more than 90% reduction in broom rape number and more than 90% increase in tomato yield. Ignoring type of applied herbicide, higher dose of application as well as splitting dose of herbicide resulted in lower broom rape infection. Keeping in view efficiency of herbicides to control broom rape over growing season, three times application of sulfosulfuron showed most prolonged control of broom rape 90 days after application while Lowest significant efficiency was observed with one time application of rimsulfuron. Maximum number of tomato number (73 per m2) and marketable fruit (63) was recorded where different doses of sulfosulfuron were applied.
