The effects of residue management and time of post-irrigation in raised bed planting system on the yield of irrigated wheat

The effective parameters on wheat yield were the optimum use of residue and water. Therefore, the effect of residue management and time of post-irrigation methods on raised bed planting systems should be evaluated for irrigated wheat. This study was performed with the split-block of design with three replications. Three levels of residue management, i. e. (1) straw burned (B), (2) straw partly removed + stalk shredder (R), (3) straw partly removed + stalk shredder + mouldboard ploughing (RP), were considered main plots. Three level of time of post-irrigation, i. e. (1) 7 days after planting (I7), (2) 14 days after planting (I14), and (3) 21 days after planting (I21) were considered sub plots. Parameters of soil cone index, moisture content, percentage of plant emergence, percentage of surface residue cover, weight of thousand kernels, water use, and wheat yield were measured. Results indicated that treatment of straw partly removed + stalk shredder + mouldboard ploughing (RP) reduced cone index by 19%, percentage of plant emergenced by 7%, percentage of surface residue cover by 63%, and water use by 5%, and increased organic matter by 3.5%, wheat yield by 5%, and water use efficiency based on wheat yield by 11.3%. Also, results showed that time of post-irrigation was not significant different on wheat yield therefore, we can delay the time of post-irrigation until 21 days after planting.
