Effect of physical forms of diet on performance of fattening male lambs

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of two physical forms of diets provided as mash (loose) or block (compact) on performance of fattening male lambs. One hundred and twenty male lambs of Zandi breed with 6-7 months age and initial body weight of 36.4 ± 4.5 kg in a 84-days trial were assigned randomly to two dietary treatments (mash and block forms of diets) with five replicates per treatment and 12 lambs per replication. Dry mater intake by lambs fed block diet was significantly higher than that of lambs fed mash diet (1.8 opposite of 1.55 kg). Average daily gains were 156 and 148 g for block and mash diets, respectively, which were not significantly different. Feed conversion ratio for block and mash diets were 11.3 and 10.6, respectively, that was not significantly different between the treatments. In total, diets offered as block form relative to mash form had no more favorable effect on performance of fattening lambs.
