To evaluate yield and some important quantitative and qualitative traits of 51 rice genotypes along with 4 local and improved checks including Hashemi, Ali Kazemi, Kadus and Khazar, an experiment was conducted in rice research institute of Iran (Rasht) in 2012. The experimental design was augmented in randomized complete block design with four checks and four replications. The selection of high yielding genotypes with good grain quality and using the genotypes with desirable traits in rice breeding program were the objectives of this experiment. Each experimental plot size was 6 square meters (2m3أm) with hill spacing of 25cm أ 25cm. In this study 7 traits were measured according to Standard Evaluation System of rice (SES, 2004). Analysis of variance showed a highly significant difference among genotypes for all traits. The difference between blocks was not significant. Mean comparison of no-replicated genotypes with Hashemi as a check was done using Least Square differences (L.S.D) method. Consequently the genotypes No 18, 24, 28, 29, 30, 33, 37, 39, 47 and 48 with higher yield(4867-6357 Kg/ha), proper plant height, suitable growth duration and good cooking grain quality with intermediate amylos and gelatinization temperature were selected as elite genotypes for advance trials. Also breeding pure lines which were early maturity, dwarf or semi dwarf with desirable morphological traits, selected as worth genetic resources for crossing block of rice breeding program. Key words: Rice, Augmented design, Breeding lines, quantitative traits, cooking quality
