Systematic study on Brassiceae (Brassicaceae) in Iran.

The Family Brassicaceae, containing 709 species and 338 genera, is one of the top ten economically important families. Brassiceae is one of the few tribes among 13-19 tribes of this family that have relatively clear boundaries with other tribes. Members of the tribe are characterized by conduplicate cotyledons and two lobed, hairs simple or absent siliques. The Flora Iranica mentioned 22 genera and 42 species of this tribe for the geographical region covered by the said Flora. Since then one species has been added to each of the following species: Conringia, Cakile, Raphanus, Griffithii, Crambe, and Diplotaxis. Furthermore, Hesperis leucoclada Boiss. has been made synonym with Pseudofortuynia. In the present study, about 1,250 unidentified samples belonging to the tribe Brassiceae deposited in IRAN and TARI Herbariums were identified. All the previously identified samples were also revised. Anatomic studies were conducted on deubious species, particularly the genus Conringia. As a result of the study, 41 Species and 19 genera of the tribe Brassiceae were confirmed and a new species Diplotaxis griffithii (Hook.F. & Thoms.) Boiss were added to the flora of Iran. With this, the total number of the species existing in the coubtry reached 42, three genera and four species of which are endemic are endemic of Iran. Three new species for Iran and one species for the world are also being reported using the data collected in this study.
