Effects of whole sugar cane silage on fattening performance of buffalo male calves.

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of different levels of whole sugar cane silage on fattening performance of male buffalo calves. whole Sugar cane was harvested and ensiled in a pit silo in Animal Husbandry Research Station of dezful. After 2 months the silo was opened and the ensiled sugar cane was evaluated for its nutritive value. For this study a number of 16 buffalo male calves with about 18 months of age in a Completely Randomized Design with 4 treatments and 4 replications for 4 months were used. Corn silage in the ration was substituted with whole sugar cane silage at the levels of 0, 33, 66, and 100 percent. Results of this experiment showed that the means of final weight of respective groups were: 482, 480.25, 475,and 491 kg. Daily weight gains were: 0.96, 0.91, 0.87 and 1.05, kg, respectively. Means for feed conversion ratio of the four groups were: 8.9, 9.61, 10.63, and 8.31 respectively and no significant difference was observed between the groups (P0.01). Daily dry matter intake of different groups were: 8.48, 8.45, 8.99, and 8.54 kg respectively. The results of daily weight gains and feed conversion ratio showed that 100 percent of corn silage can be replaced with whole sugar cane silage in the ration of male buffalo calves.
