Replacement of different levels steam treated pith in fattening male lamb's diet.

This experiment was conducted to study effect of different levels of steam treated pith on growth, carcass characteristic and feedlot performance fattening male Lori lambs. A number of 48 head male lambs were used in a randomized complete block design with 4 replications and 3 lambs in each. The lambs were fed diets with different levels of steam treated pith (0, 10, 20 and 30% DM) as total mix ration twice daily. At the end of fattening period, 4 lambs in each treatment were slaughtered for determination of carcass characteristics. The results showed that average daily gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio and cost of 1 kilogram gain per 1 kilogram of feed consume in whole treatments were not significantly different. Therefore the effect of different levels of pith on growth and fattening performance was not significant. No difference was observed between cold and warm carcass weight and carcass percentage (p.05). Based on the results, up to 30% steam treated pith can be used in the ration of fattening male lambs.
