The easily-removable seedling tray (ERST) has been widely used for rice seedling to save labor recently. The ERST has 171 small holes with 1mm diameter on bottom sides which could cause poor water flow between tray and bed. The objectives of this study were to determine a proper water management in wet bed and dry bed for ERST. Seedling establishment was compared between two irrigation types. Rice seedling, growing with irrigating on furrow, was not suitable for machine transplanting. Consequently, irrigating over bed was better than irrigating on furrow in terms of stability of seedling. This result was examined again in heavy soil, light soil and paper mat medium for two years. Seedlings in all media with irrigating over bed were suitable for machine transplanting. These results suggested that irrigating over bed would be the proper water management for different types of medium and seedling bed.
