Broad bean (Vicia faba L.) is one of the most ancient crops in the world. It has been planted in Russia since the VI-th century, but presently we have only 5 varieties of broad beans. The first step of the Broad Bean Breeding Program in our Institute included diagnosis of the diseases that infect broad bean. The Vicia faba L. germplasm is infected with Uromyces fabae (Grev.) de Bary ex Fuckel, Ascochyta fabae Speg., and Broad bean mottle virus in the Middle part of Russia. A significant negative correlation has been established between the degree of plant affection and the degree of seed germination (r=-0.49; t r=3.50 t05=2.01). The preliminary studies on the immunomodulating effect of steroid glycosides have shown that it depends on the variety. The steroid glycoside Ecostim (c= 0.005%) stimulated the growth of embryo roots and stems of the Russkie chiornie variety.
