Origanum vulgare ssp. vulgare L. and Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum Link) Ietswaart genotypes have been evaluated. The results show that the species are distinguished by morphological characters, content, qualitative and chemical composition of essential oil. Plants form shrubs 65-80 cm tall composed of 100-115 floral stems in ssp vulgare and 120-240 in ssp hirtum. Inflorescences have 15 - 18 branches in O.vulgare ssp vulgare and 20 -30 in O.vulgare ssp. hirtum. The flower corolla is white (ssp. hirtum) or pink (ssp. vulgare). The essential oil content in the genotypes O.vulgare ssp. vulgare makes 0.108 - 0.249 % (dry matter.). The genotypes O.vulgare ssp. hirtum accumulate 2.409- 5.422% (dry matter) of essential oil. GC GC-MS analysis showed that the essential oil from O.vulgare ssp. vulgare genotypes consists of 41 components. The essential oil of O. vulgare ssp hirtum consists of 24 -31 compounds depending on the genotype, with the identification ratio of 99.07-99.90%. The major components of the oil from O.vulgare ssp. vulgare include D-germacren (17.01%), beta- caryophyllene (13.05%), carvacrol (11.65%), sabinene (9.78%), trans-ocimene (9.38%), cisocimene (6.03%), and gamma-elements (4.10%). So, the chemotype of this genotype is: D-germacren/ beta-caryophyllene/ carvacrol/ sabinene/ trans-ocimene/cis-ocimene/ gamma-elements. In the essential oil of the O.vulgare ssp. hirtum genotypes, carvacrol is the major component (67.67-85.85%), followed by p-cymene (3.64-9.33%) or gamma-terpinene (8.22%), and p-cymene (5.30%). Thus, the genotypes O.vulgare ssp. hirtum evaluated are divided into three chemotypes: carvacrol /p-cymene; carvacrol / p-cymene / gamma-terpinene; carvacrol / gamma-terpinene/ p-cymene.
