This book summarises Riga pine (Pinus sylvestris L. subsp. sylvestris L. var rigensis Loudon) breeding activities that began in the former institute of Forestry and Wood chemistry (now the Latvian State Forest Research Institute ''Silava'') in the middle of the 20th century. Since then, several generations of foresters and tree breeders have come and gone and this book is intended to summarize their achievements. It covers the whole process and sequence of tree breeding activities - from the first recognition of the importance of the origin of seed material for improvement of economically important traits of trees, to the situation where all planting material is derived from genetically superior seed orchard seeds.
