High Conservation Value Forests (HCVF), developed by Forests stewardship Council (FSC), was first published in 1999. HCVF are forests with environmental and social values, which are considered of outstanding significance or critical importance, such as rare species, recretional sites or resources harvested by people. By identifying these key values, it encourages good forest management practices and biodiversity consevation. To define High Conservation Values (HCVs), it is important to decide on what the relevant forest values are and defining the thresholds for each value that would designate such value as HCVs and put in place a monitoring programme to check that this is being achieved. The HCVF toolkit provides practical methodology to be used at national or regional level or in specific locations. Beyond its original use, the HCVF concept is also expandedto a larger landscape level, which is relatively new.
