Floristic composition and structure of riverine forest at Sungai Bunut, Loagan Bunut National Park

Loagan Bunut National Park (LBNP) is mainly comprised of logged over peat swamp forest (PSF) and degraded lowland mixed dipterocarp forest, degraded Empran (riverine) forest and various stages of secondary forests after the abandonment of shifting cultivation. Riverine forest along Sg. Bunut is considered very important with the significant occurance of Pudau (Articarpus glaucus) and several species of Ficus as important source of food for the wildlife. Field surveys revealed that the forest is dominated by Artocarpus glaucus (VI = 48.64), Hevea brasiliensis (IV = 38.40), Sapium indicum (IV = 27.81), Eugenia arcuatinervia (IV = 21.81) and Pternandra multiflora (IV = 21.34). The riverine forest also contains a number of conspicuous and characteristics species namely the Baccaurea motleyana, Nauclea maingayi, Vatica mangachapoi, Ilex cymosa and Excoecaria indica. The estimated total above ground biomass of riverine forest is 247.03 ton/ha. Artocarpus glaucus has the highest estimated total above ground biomass (187348 kg), Sapium indicum (102727 kg) and Eugenia arcuatinervia (36612 kg). Rehabilition of degraded areas with Artocarpus glaucus and Ficus spp. should be considered seriously.
