Decay resistance of flakeboard bonded with protein-based resin containing biocides

The use and production of wood based composites, especially oriented strand board (OSB) has increased rapidly in the past two decades. Susceptibility of these products to bio-deterioration is a great concern. The objective of this study was to evaluate fungal decay resistance of flakeboard bonded with a soy-based wood adhesive resin containing biocides. Predetermined amounts of a wood preservative solution containing equal parts of iodo-propynyl butyl carbamate )IPBC), propiconazal and tebuconazole in mineral spirits were blended with the soybean-based resin, formulated by cross-linking 60 w % soybean flour with 40 w % phenol-formaldehyde (PF). Boards bonded with the soybean-based resin with different levels of preservatives retention were evaluated for decay resistance by a standard soilblock culture method. Blending the preservative formulations with the soybean-based resin improved the bonding strength of flakeboard. The biocides were heat stable and flakeboards containing 0.54, 0.81 and 1.63kg/m3 biocides sustained less than 4% weight loss after exposure to the brown-rot fungus Postia placenta for 12 weeks. The soy resin/preservative blends generated high levels of undesirable mineral spirit vapor (VOC) during pressing. The VOC could be reduced by partial replacement of mineral spirit with less costly crude soy oil as a biocide c0-solvent.
