The quality of processed palm oil products can only be assured as long as good quality raw materials, crude palm oil (CPO), are processed. CPO is traded on the basis of free fatty acids (FFA), moisture and impurities content. Standards such as these have been introduced to define uniform and accepted criteria to facilitate trade. Surveys are important means by which data can be updated to provide current information for the revision of standards. The standards are in turn used to prevent illegal adulteration and blending of oil products and to identify sources of contamination. Besides setting down present expectations, survey data are also used to set realistic targets for quality improvement. This paper summarizes the data from a nationwide survey involving analysis of over 1300 samples. Results showed improvement in quality and slight changes in range of identity characteristics. PORIM (now known as the Malaysian Palm Oil Board) in its capacity as a Standards Writing Organization has initiated the revision of the Malaysian Standards for CPO based on the data collected from this survey. The strategy is to collate past and present information on CPO as a basis for further work towards quality improvement and the evolution of recognized grades with predictable refining properties.
