The application of palm products in feed formulation for ruminants in Australia

This paper reviews the applications and constraints applied to palm products by the Australian stock feed industry when formulating ruminant feeds. Feed formulators use least cost formulation software to produce ruminant feed products. Formulators balance the least cost formulation of a diet with their knowledge on the physical andchemical properties of the raw materials used to manufacture feed products. There are a number of reports that limit the assessment of palm products to a ruminant diet based on the nutrient requirements for the class of livestock. However, palm products in ruminant diets also require due consideration to be given to feed mill efficiency,raw material hygiene and product quality. These factors together dictate the inclusion rates of palm products in ruminant diets in Australia.
