Underutilised indigenous fruit species with promising antioxidants

The antioxidant activities and nutritional contents of five selected underutilised or lesser known indigenous fruit species were evaluated and the results were compared to a commercial fruit; Psidium guajava (guava). The fruit species were Canarium odontophyllum (dabai), Dacryodes rostrata (kebayau), Garcinia bancana (tengkawang), Litsea graciae (engkala) and Mangifera pajang (bambangan). In the study, methanolic extract of D. rostrata showed the strongest free radical scavenging activity (IC50= 1.74mg/ml) as measured by DPPH assay, while methanolic extract of G. bancana exhibited the highest ferric reducing activity (4.68 mM Fe2+) using FRAP assay. Water extracts showed lower antioxidant activities in all samples compared to methanolic extracts. Methanolic fruit extracts with high antioxidant activities were also found to show high total phenolic content. Garcinia bancana (3943.73 mg/100g) had the highest total phenolic content followed by D. rostrata (3542.95 mg/100g), M. pajang (3228.65 mg/100g), C odontophyllum (1723.99 mg/100g) andL. graciae (1318.6 mg/100g). Ascorbic acid also plays an important role especially for the antioxidant activities of M. pajang. Mangifera pajang had the highest ascorbic acid content (727.07 mg/100g) that supported its high free radical scavenging activity. These findings indicated that the underutilised fruit species understudy have potential antioxidative properties, which are mainly due to their antioxidant compounds that may provide healrh benefits.
